Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Clarify and state the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review spirometry testing, terms and measurements
  • Identify the criteria for best test acceptability/ repeatability
  • Gain confidence in the interpretation of spirometry through case study practice

Spirometry Ins & Outs: Natalia Udarchik is a Primary Care Asthma Program (PCAP) Coordinator at Stonegate Community Health Centre in Toronto. In addition to that, she provides services at LAMP and Parkdale Community Health Centres and Unison Health and Community Services. As a Certified Respiratory Educator and TEACH (Training Enhancement in Applied Cessation Counselling and Health) graduate she works with individuals, families, and community groups providing Asthma and COPD education, conducting spirometry testing, delivering workshops on tobacco related issues as well as individual smoking cessation counselling, including implementation of the STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) program.

Spirometry Interpretation: Dr. Anthony D’Urzo, (MSc, BHPE, CCFP, FCFP) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and has spent many years teaching in the department. He has been a volunteer member of the Lung Association since 1992. Dr. D’Urzo has had the opportunity to publish numerous articles in the area of asthma and COPD management. He has been the Director of the Primary Care Lung Clinic since 1993 and is currently the Chair and Co-Founder of the Primary Care Respiratory Alliance of Canada (PCRC). His professional goal is to promote lung health in primary care. During his free time, he enjoys physical fitness, reading and spending time with his family.
