Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Clarify and state the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review spirometry testing, terms and measurements
  • Identify the criteria for best test acceptability/ repeatability
  • Gain confidence in the interpretation of spirometry through case study practice

Spirometry Ins & Outs

Jessica Sit, BSc, RRT, CRE, TEACH-Trained has been working as a RRT for 7 years and as a CRE for the last 4 years. She has worked in several clinics including the Paediatric Asthma Clinic at Humber River Hospital, Centre for Respiratory Health at Markham Stouffville Hospital and at Black Creek Community Health Centre's Lung Health Program. Jessica is currently the Primary Care Asthma Program Coordinator at South Riverdale Community Health Centre and covers two other participating sites: East End CHC and Regent Park CHC. She has participated in various projects including UHN's COPD Inspire pilot project, the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation implementation at BCCHC, and development of the EECHC's Pulmonary Rehab Program. Her passion is to improve lung health and self-management through patient empowerment and education.

Spirometry Interpretation

Dr. Itamar E. Tamari, MD, CCFP, FCFP has been working at Stonegate Community Health Centre since 1998 and is on staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Dr. Tamari completed his doctorate in Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1992 and his training in Family Medicine in 1994. Dr. Tamari is the Medical Director of the Primary Care Asthma Program, which is one of the Asthma Plan of Action (APA) projects, and has chaired it’s Advisory since 2002. He sits on The Lung Association - Ontario's Provider Education Program Steering Committee and the Asthma Advisory Committee. He is also a founding member of the Primary Care Respiratory Alliance of Canada.
