Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Clarify and state the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review spirometry testing, terms and measurements
  • Identify the criteria for best test acceptability/repeatability
  • Gain confidence in the interpretation of spirometry through case study practice

Speakers 

Spirometry Ins and Outs:

Mary Chimienti, RRT, CRE, CTE has been a Registered Respiratory Therapist for 23 years. She has worked in various areas of respiratory care including critical care, O.R., Pulmonary Rehab and currently in the Pulmonary Function Lab, outpatient and inpatient setting. Mary is also a Certified Respiratory Educator and Certified Tobacco Educator. She is currently a trainer for Health Canada’s AQHI, Climate Change and Radon educational outreach program. She has a passion for teaching and preventative medicine.
 

Spirometry Interpretation:

Dr. Allan Coates, MDCM, B.Eng., was a Pediatric Respirologist as well as the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab, Division of Respiratory Medicine, at the Hospital for Sick Children for many years. He is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist Emeritus in the Research Institute. Dr. Coates also has degrees in both engineering and medicine from McGill University in Montreal. His recent publications have focused on the promotion and use of pulmonary function testing to enhance diagnosis and management of lung disease in children and adults. In addition, Dr. Coates is the Pediatric Respirologist Mentor for the Collaborative Care Pilot Program with The Lung Association-Ontario.
