Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Identify key issues related to COPD pathophysiology and management
  • Review clinical respiratory guidelines and the role of pharmacotherapy in COPD and asthma management
  • Provide an overview of inhaler devices and proper technique
  • Recognize the impact of acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD)
  • Emphasize the relevance of co-morbidities to the clinical management of COPD
  • Consider a complex case associated with AECOPD and co-morbidities



COPD Presenter

Dr. Bell, MD, CCFP is a family physician and clinical researcher in Toronto, Canada. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto and on the active staff of the Humber River Hospital. He is a recipient of the College of Family Physicians of Canada Award of Excellence. Dr. Bell is on the Primary Panel and was the past chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Antiplatelet Guideline Committee. He is the only primary care physician to ever chair a CCS guideline committee. He is also on the Primary Panel of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Atrial Fibrillation Guideline Committee and on the Board of Directors of Hypertension Cananda. Dr. Bell is also part of the Canadian Stroke Network Professional Development Committee. Dr. Bell’s involvement in continuing medical education includes the development and presentation of many national projects. He has served as faculty and chair of countless committees and advisory boards dedicated to serving the common interests of the medical profession and the public. His research, commentaries and letters have been presented and published internationally.

Respiratory Medications Presenters

Jennifer MacKinnon, B.Sc., RRT, CRE is a Respiratory Therapist and Certified Respiratory Educator with a background that includes twenty years working in respiratory home care. During this time she had the opportunity to lead healthcare teams and implement many community based programs and services. In 2016, she joined The Lung Association’s Provider Education Program team as Curriculum Developer and in 2017, became the Program Manager. She has a strong interest in promoting respiratory health and her interests include patient and provider education and quality improvement in healthcare.

Lana Biro, RRT, CRE is a Curriculum Developer for the Provider Education Program at The Lung Association - Ontario. She has been involved with numerous lung health advocacy initiatives including answering calls on the provincial Lung Health Information Line, Lung Health Ambassadors and COPD support groups. Lana is a trainer for RESPTREC®, she facilitates workshops for health-care professionals on asthma, COPD, Spirometry and Chronic Disease. She is also a CAMH/TEACH-trained facilitator for Motivational Interviewing workshops.
