Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify risk factors and epidemiology of COPD
  • Understand the role of spirometry in COPD diagnosis
  • Advocate that smoking cessation works
  • Assess COPD severity using most updated clinical practice guidelines
  • List key components of COPD management and prevention
  • Complete two COPD case studies by applying key management principles



Dr. Chris Allen, MA, BM, FRCPC, FRCP is a Respirologist at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at McMaster University. His medical training was at Oxford University and the Royal London Hospital in England. He completed training in Respiratory Medicine at McMaster in 1984 and joined the staff of the Firestone Clinic. He is a member of the Advisory Committees for the Primary Care Asthma Programme, co-chair of the OLA Provider Education Programme, and recently joined the OLA Hamilton and Region Breathing Council. Dr Allen’s research interests have been in respiratory disorders related to gastroesophageal reflux and he also has a long-standing interest in pulmonary physiology, clinical exercise testing, program evaluation, and medical database development.
